Medicare Rebates

To access Medicare rebates for individual therapy, you will need a valid referral plan and a current Medicare card. If you are unsure whether you hold or are eligible for a Medicare card, visit servicesaustralia.gov.au. Rebate amounts are current as of May 2026 and are indexed annually — verify current rates at mbsonline.gov.au.

GP Mental Health Treatment Plan (GP MHTP)

The most common referral pathway for psychology services.

  • Rebate: $145.25 per session

  • Eligibility: individuals experiencing mental health difficulties. There is no requirement to have a prior diagnosis — your GP will assess your presentation and determine whether a GP MHTP is appropriate for your circumstances.

  • Maximum sessions: 10 per calendar year (1 January – 31 December). Unused sessions do not carry over.

  • Sessions are accessed in two courses: an initial 6 sessions, followed by a GP review to access the remaining 4.

  • Referrals can be issued by a GP or psychiatrist.

GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP)

  • Rebate: $61.80 per session

  • Eligibility: any individual with a chronic condition (present, or likely to be present, for at least 6 months), including an ongoing mental illness, where the GP is coordinating care alongside at least one other health professional. This does not mean you must already be seeing multiple providers — your GP will determine whether this plan is appropriate for your situation.

  • Maximum sessions: 5 per calendar year (1 January – 31 December). Not exclusive to psychology — can be shared across all eligible allied health providers, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists (OTs), and dieticians.

  • Referrals are issued by a GP.

Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plan (EDP)

  • Rebate: $145.25 per session

  • Eligibility: any individual diagnosed with one of the following eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, or other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED), which includes atypical anorexia nervosa.

  • Please note: REKNDL Psychology's current scope for eating disorder treatment is limited to presentations that do not require a higher level of medical care — specifically, Bec does not currently offer treatment for anorexia nervosa at low weight, which typically requires a multidisciplinary team. If you are unsure whether your current presentation falls within Bec's scope of practice, please get in touch and she can discuss this with you.

  • Maximum sessions: 40 per 12-month plan period (from the date the EDP was created). Not exclusive to psychology — can be shared across clinical psychology and dietetics (maximum 20 sessions with a dietician; maximum 40 sessions with a psychologist).

  • Sessions are accessed in courses of up to 10, with GP review required between courses.

  • Referrals can be issued by a GP or psychiatrist.

  • Please note: if you currently hold a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, an EDP is generally not developed at the same time. Your GP can advise on the most appropriate plan for your circumstances.

  • Diagnosis documentation: if you have a pre-existing eating disorder diagnosis, written documentation (such as a diagnostic letter or report) will be required. If you do not have a pre-existing diagnosis, REKNDL Psychology can undertake a clinical assessment and provide your GP with the relevant information to support development of an EDP.

Treatment Plan for Complex Neurodevelopmental Conditions (under 25-year-olds)

  • Rebate: $98.95 per session

  • Eligibility: any individual aged under 25 with a diagnosis of a complex neurodevelopmental condition, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disability, or global developmental delay. ADHD alone does not qualify under this pathway.

  • Maximum sessions: 20 sessions over a lifetime. This is a once-only entitlement — once exhausted, no further sessions are available under this plan. Sessions cannot be claimed after the 25th birthday, even if the referral was issued prior and unused sessions remain. Not exclusive to psychology — can be shared across speech pathologists, OTs, audiologists, physiotherapists, and dieticians.

  • Sessions are accessed in courses of up to 10, with GP review required between courses.

  • Referrals can be issued by a GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician.

  • Diagnosis documentation: written documentation of your diagnosis will be required prior to REKNDL Psychology providing your doctor with the relevant information to support development of this plan. If you do not have a pre-existing ASD diagnosis, a formal diagnosis can be made through REKNDL Psychology's neurodivergent assessment process.

Please speak with your GP about which plan may be relevant to your circumstances.

All services are privately billed.
